To do a shoulder pad, start with a club held on the fat end. Throw it so that it rotates halfway around and lands on your shoulder (normally the one opposite the hand that threw it if you're doing a crossing throw) with the handle end facing back, balances there briefly, reverses its direction of rotation, and rolls back down. Then catch it on the fat end, in the hand on the same side as the shoulder that it was on.
