The box is a synchronous pattern with a shape resembling a box. In a 3 ball box, two balls go straight up and down on the sides, and the other is thrown back and forth horizontally at the bottom of the pattern. Each time you throw, you throw two balls: The right hand throws a ball straight up, and the left hand throws another ball straight across into the right hand. Then the same throws are repeated, but with the left hand throwing straight up and the right hand throwing straight across. In siteswap notation, the box is (4,2x)*.

It's also possible to do 4, 5, and 6 ball versions of the box. 4 ball "box" patterns include (6,6)(2x,2x), (6,2x)(6,2x)*, (8,2x)(4,2x)*, and (6x,2x)*, the sprung 3 ball cascade, which is equivalent to the 3 ball box seen as a sprung 2 ball fountain, but doesn't have a box shape. 5 balls can be done in a box as the sprung 4 ball fountain (8,2x)*, or the more boxy-looking (8,2x)(8,2x)(8,2x)* and (c,2x)(8,2x)(4,2x)*. (6,4x)* is a 5 ball pattern analogous to the 3 ball box (4,2x)*, but it doesn't look like a box. The easiest way to do a box with 6 balls is (a,a)(2x,2x). (a,2x)(a,2x)(a,2x)(a,2x)* and (g,2x)(c,2x)(8,2x)(4,2x)* are extremely difficult box patterns for 6 balls.
